Development

I think one of the best things about teaching is there is always room for improvement, and the chance to make those improvements year to year. A teacher should never be satisfied with his or her way of doing things. I also believe that a class should never be taught and constructed the exact same way from one year to the next, because nothing is being improved. Therefore, I am constantly pursuing ways to further my development as a science teacher.

Content Knowlegde
My grandpa has a World War Two book collection that has well over 500 books, and he has read every one of them at least once. Growing up, I was always inspired by that. He did it because he was simply interested in that topic. So, I decided that I wanted to do the same thing in physics. My goal by the time I am 50 is to have over 500 physics books. Right now I am at around 35 books, so I have a ways to go. I ask my wife every year for Christmas to just get me books. I love to read about physics. I feel that it is important for my content knowledge to go above and beyond the material in the textbook, because I want to be able to answer any question a student may have. Therefore, I read and reread books to keep my knowledge and understanding sharp and ever expanding.

Teaching Methods
As stated in my background, I am in graduate school in the School of Education at KU. My goal is to earn a Ph.D in education. I am interested in doing research on helping students improve their retention of information over a longer period of time, and improving critical thinking skills. I plan on being a life long learner of educational theories and hopefully contributing to those theories one day.

Self Evaluation
I feel that it is important for me to see myself teach. Therefore, I record myself every so often so that I can go back and evaluate the following:

  • Is wait time on questions sufficient
  • Is my pace too fast or too slow
  • Does every student get the opportunity to contribute
  • Do I articulate and speak in a clear and concise manner
  • Do I use every opportunity to ask questions instead of just telling the information

This helps me to see my areas of weakness that need to be improved.
